Which video format to convert to

Each Output format takes different codecs and handles the sound in its own way:

MP4 with H.264 is the format that plays almost everywhere, which is why both are the defaults. Resize (height) offers Original, 1080p, 720p and 480p. The quality is fixed, so there is no slider and the converted file can end up larger or smaller than the original. To shrink it, use the video compressor afterwards.

Convert MOV, MKV and WebM to MP4

  • MOV to MP4

    Phone and camera clips often arrive as MOV. Leave Output format on MP4 and Codec on H.264, and the file opens on Windows, Android and most players.

  • MKV to MP4

  • WebM to MP4

What the GIF gets

  • 12 frames per second
  • Up to 960 px wide, or the height you pick in Resize (height)
  • A 256-colour palette
  • No sound

  • GIFs grow fast with length, so convert a short clip
  • Choose 480p in Resize (height) for a smaller file
  • Shrink the result with the GIF compressor

How to convert a video file

  1. Drop the video

    Add an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V or 3GP file up to 100 MB.

  2. Pick the format

    Choose the Output format, then the Codec and Resize (height) if you need them. H.264 in MP4 is the safe choice.

  3. Convert and download

    Click Convert Video and download the result within 30 minutes, before it is deleted.

MP4 with H.264 plays almost everywhere, so choose it unless something asks for another format. Pick WebM for web pages and GIF for a short silent loop.

WebM takes VP9 or AV1 only, so H.264 is disabled when WebM is the output. The Codec menu is hidden for GIF.

The sound is copied unchanged when the new format takes it. Otherwise it is re-encoded, to Opus for WebM and AAC for MP4 and MOV. A GIF has no sound.

The quality is fixed, so the file can come out larger or smaller. Lower Resize (height), or run the result through the video compressor.
